With the lingering effects of the ever-present cold, I slept in this morning. I also attribute to the ceaseless waves of rhinovirus my vague joint pain, which made clambering out of bed even more unpleasant. As I shambled down the hall to investigate options for breakfast, I could hear the telltale clinking of LEGO™ building from Simon's room.

I cracked open his door to see him in Build Posture: hunched over his work on the floor. "Hey Symers, we're a bit late this morning. So you should go potty and get dressed."

"No, it's OK dad."

He often is arbitrarily contrary lately. Part of being 4. Or part of being my son. Or both. "No, kiddo. We don't have a lot of time, so you should start doing your jobs."

"I'm almost done building my time machine."

"Your building a time machine? Out of LEGO™?"

"Yeah! That way I can have fun building it, and then I can use it to go back in time and do my jobs and be on time."

I'm not sure what I would have done if, after continuing on to the kitchen, I found him already there all dressed and ready. Because I'm not sure I could feel even more proud of him.

A short while later, when the wife got home from her morning run, she also encountered Simon with his time machine. She asked if he wanted to visit some dinosaurs. "Sure! We could all go; it's a family time machine."
