I've spent a week with my son Simon, almost continuously. Here are some things that I've learned so far.

  • You can't save up sleep. Dammit.
  • Babies appear to be able to violate the laws of conservation of matter.
  • Looking into the face of your own child, you swear you can see yourself, your spouse, and your parents in the features. Which makes sense, to a certain degree, but feels like it goes far beyond that.
  • Pursuant to the first point, trying to snatch bits of sleep when the opportunity rises often means that other things get interrupted...

...To Be Continued.

Several naps and feedings happen.

  • It is very hard to type or code one-handed. Or a great many other things, while cradling a baby in the other arm.
  • Babies seem to have a startle reflex where they immediately splay their little chubby limbs in a spread-eagle. Probably an instinctive protection against falling or tumbling. And it's awfully amusing for me to try to trigger. Which in turn, when I get caught, triggers Angry Momma.
  • Simon has what the lactation nurse referred to as, "a powerful suck". We've dubbed it The Black Hole.
  • Swaddling seems to have some dramatic calming power, but I wonder to what extent it is interfering with him figuring out the articulation of his grapplers and flailers.
  • It really is different when it is your kid.
  • It's fun being a parent with S. She's great.
