Contemplating your own sanity is like trying to see the back of your head without any mirrors or cameras. The best you can do is just run your hand over it to get a feel for it, but never really know if it's the way it should be. You can make judgments about how it seems to other people by their reactions, but their reactions are themselves tainted by their own perception of sanity (or how the back of a head should look, if we bumble along with the metaphor).
