Although, I AM trying to become a United States citizen - my finally-correct application was accepted on September 3rd 2025. That's almost a year. With single update this past spring "still in process", it has otherwise been entirely opaque.

For reference, some of my fellow Canadian transplants have in the past had their applications for American citizenship only take 6 months from submission to ceremony. Notably, that was in a different administration. Which causes one to imagine political and geographic reasons why my application would be so comparatively slow.

Nominally, the purpose of this is to participate in the democratic process, in addition to all the ankle-grabbing taxes I pay. But with my life so deeply rooted here, with kids in school, it feels faintly ridiculous to be constantly at risk of deportation by arbitrary and un-appealable forces. Especially when those forces are rendered functionally insane by thoughtless political pressures while simultaneously being flooded with resources and expectations for cruel results.
