Simon has learned how to crawl!<br />

Sort of.<br />

He's not just really, really slow. He actually goes <i>backwards</i>.<br />

What seems to be happening is that he's reaching out towards... whatever. Something in the direction he's interested. Except, coincidentally, his hands are the part of his body that have the best traction on the smooth hard-wood floors, because the rest of his contact patch is slippery cotton-ness. So he sends himself scooting away from his nominal goal with each lunging effort. At least, that's what is happening mechanically.<br />
<br />
Psychologically and emotionally is a different matter entirely. His expressions of confusion, frustration, and even a sort of proto-philosophical exasperation are...<br />
<br />
What's a good description?<br />

I think the word I'm looking for is "hilarious". But it might be "adorable". Or even, "precious".<br />
<br />
Man, I can just imagine how much he's going to hate this post later in life, if the internet still exists when he's old enough to realize just how much of a sadistic jerk his dad was. Just look at him: the struggle, the wonder, the bizzarre, slightly messed-up wrongness of it all. And what's his dad doing? Not being a beacon of instruction. Certainly not providing emotional support for the safety of a budding psyche. No, dad is taking pictures while cackling with amusement at his only son's predicament.<br />

Actually, now that I look at it some more, I wonder if I don't see the beginnings of Simon's disapproval twinkling in his eyes. His little proto-mind formulating ideas about how infantile his dad is.<br />

Well, if it's any consolation, son, you're most likely going to end up waaaay cooler than your dad. Not that that's saying much.</div>RooK
